Window Patch Dies

Window patch dies are made for label jobs that need a clear viewing section, a shaped aperture or a neat cut-out over a product inside the pack. We supply made-to-order dies from Wadeville, Germiston to label printers and converters across South Africa.

Window Patch Dies

What a window patch die does on press

A window patch die cuts the opening or clear-view section in a label before the label is applied to the pack. The opening can be fully cut through, kiss-cut to a liner, or combined with a patch film where the printer needs a clean viewing area for the product inside. For food, beverage, personal care and household labels, the die must hold a sharp edge and keep the cut line consistent from the first roll to the last.

We make rotary solid dies, flexible magnetic dies and matching magnetic cylinders for label converters that run short jobs one day and repeat work the next. The aim is tight register, clean release and no unnecessary nicking at the window edge. On narrow web work, a small variation can show up fast, so the tolerance matters.

  • Suitable for clear windows, shaped apertures and cut-through openings
  • Made for label converters running on rotary finishing equipment
  • Can be matched to repeat jobs for the same carton, pack or container size

Sizes, profiles and cut options we can supply

Window patch dies are made to the label size, the aperture size and the web width on your press. Common options include round windows, oval windows, rectangles with radiused corners and custom shapes that follow a bottle shoulder or pack profile. Where the label needs a section removed for viewing, we can set the cut path to suit the clear area and the adhesive layout around it.

We work from CAD and sample approval where needed, then check the repeat, bearer setting and cylinder fit before dispatch. If you are changing from a flat label to a window label, we will also look at waste strip width, liner strength and the pull direction so the die does not tear the substrate on press.

  • Rotary solid dies for higher volume label finishing
  • Flexible magnetic dies for repeat jobs and shorter runs
  • Custom apertures sized to product shape, pack artwork and liner margin
  • Options for kiss-cut, through-cut, perforation and score lines where suitable

Where window patch dies suit best

These dies suit label printers and converters working on packs where the customer wants to see the product, colour or fill level through the label. That includes sauces, jams, cosmetic bottles, cleaners, nutraceutical jars and speciality packs where the window is part of the sales message. In humid coastal areas like Durban and Gqeberha, clean cutting matters because adhesive and liner behaviour can shift with moisture and storage conditions.

They also suit jobs that move between Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town with repeat demand from the same product line. When a pack is seen in retail, the window opening must stay neat. If the cut is rough or the corners lift, the whole label can look second-rate even if the print is excellent.

  • Food and beverage labels with viewing windows
  • Cosmetic and personal care packs with shaped cut-outs
  • Household and industrial labels needing product visibility
  • Short run trials and repeat production for the same pack size

Installation, setup and press requirements

Window patch dies do not need special gas or utility connections. They need the correct die holder or cylinder fit, accurate setup on the press and proper impression settings. The press must be aligned before the first run and the bearing surfaces checked so the die tracks true across the web. If the pressure is too high, the cut can damage the liner or leave burrs on the edge of the aperture.

For rotary work, we check the magnetic cylinder or solid die arrangement, repeat length and bearer contact. For flexible dies, clean mounting and correct magnetic pull are important. Power needs are whatever your label line already uses, but the finishing unit should have stable feed, stable tension and a clean web path. In load-shedding conditions, a consistent restart procedure helps avoid misalignment and waste.

  • Correct cylinder repeat and web width required before fitting
  • No gas supply needed for the die itself
  • Press tension, registration and bearer setting should be checked at setup
  • Stable power on the finishing line reduces start-stop waste during outages

Care, servicing and repeat life

Window patch dies give better life when they are cleaned after use, stored flat or in the correct holder and checked before the next repeat. Adhesive build-up, liner dust and small nicks can affect the cut edge, especially on fine aperture work. A quick inspection before a rerun can save a roll and stop a wasted shift.

We offer die regrind, cylinder refurb, magnet checks and repeat matching for converters who need the same job remade later. If the label has changed, send the new sample and we will confirm what has moved. Sometimes the artwork is the same but the pack wall thickness, bottle shape or window position has shifted a few millimetres and that is enough to need a fresh setting.

  • Clean adhesive and paper dust from the die after each job
  • Keep repeat dies labelled for the correct customer and pack size
  • Check for edge wear if the cut line starts to feather
  • Use servicing before the die starts marking the liner or tearing the window

What to send when ordering a window patch die

When you order, send the finished label size, the window size, the exact shape and the material type. We also need the press or finishing line details, the repeat length, web width and whether the job is running on a rotary or flexible setup. If there is a sample label or an old die, that helps us match the job more quickly and avoid wrong assumptions.

It also helps to tell us whether the cut must be full through-cut, kiss-cut or score only, and whether the opening must sit in relation to text, barcode or artwork. If the pack is going to Durban, Cape Town or upcountry distribution, mention any storage issues too, because humidity and transport can affect the liner and adhesive behaviour.

  • Label size and repeat length in millimetres
  • Window shape, opening size and exact position on artwork
  • Substrate type, liner type and adhesive notes
  • Press model or finishing setup and whether you need urgent remake support

Questions we get asked

Can you match an existing window patch die?

Yes, we can repeat match from a sample, old die or approved artwork and check the cylinder repeat before making the replacement.

Do window patch dies need special power or gas?

The die does not require gas of its own. You only need the normal power used by your label press or finishing line.

What information do you need before cutting the die?

Send the label size, window size, repeat length, web width, material details and the type of cut you need so we can set it correctly.

Send through your die brief.
